Making Tax Digital is here – here’s how Finity already has you covered

If you work with subcontractors, you’ll have heard plenty about Making Tax Digital. From April 2026, it’s no longer something to plan for – it’s here.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s changed, and why Finity customers are already ahead of the curve.
What’s changed?
HMRC’s Making Tax Digital initiative is expanding. From April 2026, any business or sole trader with a combined income of over £50,000 is required to submit their earnings to HMRC every quarter, not just once a year at self-assessment time.
For workers and subcontractors operating in recruitment and payroll, that means they need accurate, up-to-date earnings information on a quarterly basis.
That’s a big shift – and for agencies and bureaus, it has the potential to create a real admin headache unless you’re already set up to handle it.
The old way doesn’t work anymore
Historically, when a subcontractor needed their earnings information, they’d contact you.
You’d dig out the relevant data, format a statement, and send it over. That might have been manageable when requests came in occasionally, but quarterly reporting changes the volume.
More frequent reporting means more dependency on time your team doesn’t have. That’s the problem Finity’s Worker Portal solves.
How Finity keeps your workers MTD-ready, automatically
The Finity Worker Portal gives subcontractors direct, self-serve access to their own statement of earnings – updated in real time, available 24/7, no request required.
The moment a payment is processed, it’s reflected in their portal. They can log in, view their earnings, and pull the information they need for their quarterly MTD submission – without having to pick up the phone or send you an email.
For your team, that means:
- Fewer statement requests landing in the inbox around reporting deadlines
- Less time spent formatting and sending earnings information manually
- Fewer delays for workers who need to keep their records up to date
- More confidence that workers can access the information they need, when they need it
The time it saves adds up quickly, especially as MTD becomes a regular fixture of the tax calendar.
Self-service isn’t just a nice-to-have anymore
MTD is a good reminder that the old model, where workers rely on agencies and bureaus to hand-deliver information, doesn’t scale.
MTD has made self-service more important, but it hasn’t made it new to Finity. We’ve always built around the idea that workers and clients should be able to access accurate information without relying on payroll teams to manually provide it.
Compliance timelines are tighter, and the expectation from HMRC is that accurate records are available and reported promptly. The agencies and bureaus that will handle MTD best are the ones that have already shifted to self-service. Workers have the tools to manage their own records, and payroll teams aren’t buried in admin every quarter.
Finity was built with that in mind. The Worker Portal isn’t a bolt-on – it’s a core part of how we think payroll should work in a modern, compliance-conscious industry. It’s also free of charge for both you and your clients.
Already a Finity customer?
Your subcontractors can access the Worker Portal right now. If you’ve got workers who haven’t set up their account yet, it’s worth nudging them to do so ahead of their first quarterly submission.
